TVO was recognized at the sixth annual TT Club Innovation in Safety Award Ceremony held in London February 22, 2024, for a novel system that reduces the likelihood of incidents that can lead to container loss, vessel loss, or injury to containership crews.
TVO President Jim Maher says being shortlisted for the TT Club Innovation in Safety Award is gratifying for TVO—which only recently introduced its technology to the maritime sector—and a “win” for shipping safety.
“Reimagining our subsea tethering technology for maritime operations has allowed us to help vessel owners address a chronic challenge with a proven solution,” he says. “We couldn’t be happier that the system we designed to enhance blowout preventer reliability and perfromance is now being applied to improve container stack safety.”
Companies that submit entries for this award, which recognizes innovative products, processes and services that mitigate risk and improve safety in a complex, dynamic, and challenging sector, must show how their product, idea, solution, process, scheme or other innovation has demonstrably improved safety.
TVO’s solution applies its existing proprietary technologies to address multiple challenges, including:
The TVO system uses sensors installed on the container stacks and the bridge to monitor container stack and vessel stability, predict and detect unsafe conditions, and provide the vessel captain with advance notice that enables evasive action to be taken. It is already in service on several containerships, and contracts are in place for additional installations.
The Innovation in Safety Award is independently organized by the International Cargo Handling Coordination Association (ICHCA), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving safety, security, sustainability and efficiency of cargo handling and goods movement, and TT Club, a market-leading independent provider of mutual insurance and risk management services for the international transport and logistics industry.
