Hercules™ TBOP solution enables deepwater DP rig to perform shallow-water well workover
(HOUSTON) Trendsetter Vulcan Offshore (TVO), a developer of innovative solutions for the offshore industry, has provided its proprietary Hercules™ tethered blowout preventer (TBOP) system to bring a shut-in well onstream in the Gulf of America (GoA).

For the recent installation on a field in the northwestern sector of the GoA, TVO worked with an operator that had successfully used the Hercules™ TBOP system on a previous project. This novel system was developed specifically to allow a deepwater floater fitted with a dynamic positioning (DP) system to work safely in shallow water.
Engaging TVO during the well planning stage of the project, the operator explained the conditions at the well site and its plans to use a DP rig that had been working on a long-term contract in deepwater to execute the workover of a well in shallower water. This solution eliminated the need for a separate moored rig on site, which would have added significant cost.
TVO experts made the BOP modifications required for the well site, rapidly designing and customizing it and carrying out in situ load testing—the first time this had been done on site—to validate the system. The installation went as planned, with the deepwater DP rig safely executing the workover.
